Words of the Week III

Two useful techniques for self-control

When we are faced with two options and have to make a decision but it is not one hundred percent clear which option is right and which is wrong, then we should try to find out which option is closer to the whims and desires of our soul and do the opposite. This technique is mentioned in Nahj-ul-Balaghah as wise saying number 289.

There is another technique that can also be used. Sometimes we are faced with a situation in which we have several options and do not know what to do. For example, a person offers some kind of job to us or we do not know what position to take regarding some issues in our community or family. The technique is to try to imagine what a person, of whose piety we are very sure, would do if faced with such a situation.
